Passed on

  • 2021 Highlander, Crowsnest Pass ($27,000 private): needs a $9,700 transmission per the seller.
  • 2019 Pilot LX, Calgary ($22,700) and 2020 Durango, Calgary ($18,000): rebuilt title and hail damage.
  • 2023 Honda Passport Touring, Castlegar ($35,997): 163K km on a 2023.
  • 2017 RAV4 Hybrid, Nelson ($28,500 private): 158K km and priced like a much newer car.
  • Online retailers: Clutch had no matching SUVs in BC, and Canada Drives now only matches buyers with local dealers.
  • Suspiciously cheap listings (e.g. a 2023 Atlas R-Line for $21,995): treat as scams or salvage until proven otherwise.

Before you buy

  • Ask for the Carfax. Check for accident claims, out-of-province history and "rebuilt" status.
  • For towing, confirm a factory tow package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler).
  • Get an independent pre-purchase inspection, especially on private sales and anything over 100K km.
  • Private sales: run the VIN through ICBC for liens and pay by bank draft at the seller's bank.
  • Alberta purchases: book the BC out-of-province inspection before registering, and ask the dealer to quote transport to Nelson.
  • Negotiate: many listings have sat 8–22 weeks.
